"Swinging the Rope (2023) is a performative action situated between a popular game and an artistic act, designed to disrupt the everyday temporality of public space. The image of two people swinging a rope immediately evokes childhood and a shared bodily memory. From this simple and recognizable gesture, the work proposes an activation of space that questions who can inhabit it, how, and at what pace. The action consists of swinging a rope continuously, implicitly inviting participation, but without demanding it. Some people decide to jump, others prefer to beat the rope, stop to observe, or simply ask what is happening. It is in this diversity of responses (participating, rejecting, watching, interrupting) that the piece unfolds its political dimension. The game ceases to be merely a childhood memory and becomes a device for encounter, negotiation, and collective stance-taking. Swinging the Rope disrupts the functional flow of urban traffic and proposes an alternative rhythm within the public space. The rope functions as a mechanism that organizes time and movement, momentarily displacing the logics of productivity, control, or efficient circulation. In this displacement, the work reclaims the right to stop, to play, and to occupy space through the body, without a utilitarian purpose. Starting from what appears to be a children's game, the work highlights the distance and potential friction between institutions and the bodies that surround them. The rope points to both the architecture and the bodies that support it, revealing the rhythms that order public life and the forms of obedience, waiting, or exclusion that these spaces produce. Jumping, not jumping, or interrupting the action becomes a bodily decision that reclaims different ways of being and inhabiting the commons. |
